When Giving Back is Elementary
Since its origins as a paper-mill town more than 100 years ago, paper has been central to Camas, Wash. The city is also home to one of Georgia-Pacific’s facilities that produces copy paper and commercial paper towels. Recently, when the greater community called out for help, naturally our employees quickly answered with what the Camas mill does best - paper.
In early February, Crestline Elementary school in Vancouver, less than 10 miles from the mill, was gutted by a massive fire. Nearly 500 students and staff were dispersed among five schools in the area. With the local school district suffering a total loss, it was in need of nearly everything including basic school supplies to help offset the needs of so many displaced students.
That’s when the Camas mill stepped in to help the Evergreen School District with a donation of 800 cases of Georgia-Pacific Spectrum® copy paper, valued at more than $23,000.
“My daughter is a teacher at Crestline Elementary School,” said Bob Hieronymus, a marketing director at Georgia-Pacific’s Camas mill. “She told me the outpouring of support from the community to help students transition from the loss of their school to their temporary classrooms has been amazing. The fact that the mill has reached out in a very meaningful way is gratifying to me personally, and makes me very proud to be a part of Georgia-Pacific. I know this donation was greatly appreciated.”
As we do in so many of our facility communities across the country, when it comes to helping in a time of need and supporting our local cities and schools - it’s a no-brainer.
