DensDeck Performs at The Music City Center

In tune with Nashville’s nickname, The Music City Center will be the city’s newest 1.2 million-square-foot convention space that’s set to open in early 2013. Patterned after the rolling hills of Tennessee, the building’s undulating design posed challenges for the 14.5-acre roof. Georgia-Pacific DensDeck® roof boards performed center stage by helping to meet The Music City Center’s unique roof construction demands.

One of the Center’s distinctive features is its vegetative roof - the largest in the Southeast - which helps absorb the South’s unforgiving heat and make the building more energy efficient. Georgia-Pacific's DensDeck boards were selected by the construction team for their high compressive strength and protective qualities needed to withstand the four acres of planted sedum, a variety of water-storing foliage.

This rooftop micro-climate is a key component to The Music City Center earning LEED® Silver certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a coveted status in “green” building design.

In addition to meeting the environmental aspects important to the Center’s design, the roof had to hold up to additional foot traffic and more equipment than the average commercial rooftop. The DensDeck cover boards, made of fiberglass mat gypsum, fit the bill but also provide a layer of protection against moisture and mold, and outdoor elements including wind and fire.

Georgia-Pacific's DensDeck boards are also pitch-perfect for the job because they have been shown to withstand material wear and job site damage far more effectively than other conventional roofing products.

The roof’s protection is vital, given that down below the Center will not only house the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame containing the city’s important musical treasures, it will host hundreds of thousands of important guests and convention-goers.

As Nashville’s newest downtown star, The Music City Center will soon be singing from the rooftops.
