Georgia-Pacific Launches Talon™ Mining Reagents at Coal Prep 2008
to Help Coal Companies Meet Growing Global Demand
ATLANTA, GA. April 29, 2008 --
With coal in short supply worldwide, obtaining maximum quality and yield from coal preparation plants is vital to feeding high global demand and capitalizing on higher coal prices. With this in mind, Georgia-Pacific Chemicals LLC is unveiling its new patent-pending Talon™ Mining Reagents product line in conjunction with its distributor, Freedom Industries (booth 423), at the Coal Prep 2008 Exhibition and Conference, held April 29-May 1 in Lexington, KY.
“Georgia-Pacific Chemicals is committed to the development of products and expertise that help its customers obtain higher efficiencies from their mining processes,” said Dennis Kennedy, commercial manager of mining chemicals. “At Coal Prep 2008, we are pleased to introduce our innovative line of mining reagents. Our Talon depressants selectively target the gangue while our Talon collectors selectively target the ore during the coal flotation process. The use of our reagents can improve yields which can result in an increase in plant profits.”
By selectively binding to clay in the flotation separation process, Talon depressants reduce ash content, resulting in a low-moisture, high-BTU/ton coal that allows the plant to process more low-cost or unwashed coal while still consistently meeting quality specifications. Talon depressants also reduce the need for costly flocculants and coagulants in thickeners by allowing faster settling of solid tailings, the unusable portion of coal ore, and shorter filtration times, as confirmed in third-party studies at the University of Kentucky.
“The Talon depressant is a unique product in the coal industry based on its key component, a highly effective clay binder,” said Dr. Daniel Tao of the University of Kentucky. “Since 2005, we have conducted extensive laboratory studies with this binder in the flotation separation process using coal samples from Kentucky, W. Virginia, and Alabama and found it extremely efficient in attracting and depressing gangue to produce a higher quality end product.”
Talon collectors help improve the bottom line by preventing the loss of combustible coal with discarded tailings, which increases production in the coal prep plant and can save capital costs for expanded flotation capacity needed to meet higher demand. Also, Talon collectors are derived from trees and offer a safe alternative to petroleum-containing fuel oil and diesel. Talon collectors are permitted for underground injection as well.
Georgia-Pacific Chemicals has named Freedom Industries, a supplier of specialty chemicals for the mining, steel and cement industries, as a distributor of its Talon Mining Reagents for West Virginia, Virginia, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Maryland, Minnesota, Kentucky and Michigan.
“We are excited to offer our customers inventive products like Talon that push past the status quo in coal recovery to bring profit and productivity benefits to mining preparation plants,” said Joshua Herzing, director of business development for Freedom Industries. “Georgia-Pacific's longstanding technical expertise and R&D capabilities combined with the industry knowledge, skill and reputation of Freedom Industries will provide an excellent platform for growth and development of new technology to meet existing and future customer demands. We are proud to be part of Georgia-Pacific’s strategy as a global supplier of mining reagents in multiple market segments.”
