ATLANTA, Georgia. June 29, 2000 -- Georgia-Pacific's Conway, N.C., resin production facility team has earned the Chairman's Safety Award. In April, plant teams surpassed 500,000 hours without an OSHA recordable accident.
Chairman and CEO Pete Correll created this special award in 1996 to recognize company facilities that demonstrate outstanding safety performance.
"I am proud of what these employees have done and recognize them as the ultimate example of what we can accomplish when we commit ourselves to a task," Correll said. "We offer our congratulations and our thanks to this special group of employees who make a difference every day by working safely."
Mario Concha, vice president - chemicals and resins, said, "No workplace objective is so important that it needs to be accomplished at the expense of sending someone home from work suffering from the effects of an injury."
Lee Thomas, executive vice president - paper and chemicals, added, "This notable safety record occurred because employees decided they wanted this plant to be a safe place to work and they did what it took to make that happen."
Ron Walls, Conway plant manager, said, "We focus a lot of attention on safety, which is a way of life in our culture. We believe in the philosophy that nothing is so important that it can't be done safely. This record reflects our personal commitment and accountability through a dedicated team effort."
The Conway plant, operated and managed by 105 employees, produces formaldehyde and liquid and powder resins that are used in abrasives, doors, furniture, siding, particleboard, plywood, oriented strand board and other products.
