Georgia-Pacific To Close Ukiah Chemical Plant

UKIAH, California. February 23, 2000 -- Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific Corp., today announced it will close its resin manufacturing facilities at Ukiah.

The decision followed a review by Georgia-Pacific Resins of its western operations – including which products are manufactured at which facilities – to determine the best and most competitive locations for all products, the best way to serve each plant’s customers, and how best to increase the profitability of the company’s operations to continue to expand its business presence in the region in the future.

All of the Ukiah plant’s 22 employees will be encouraged to apply for other available positions within the company.
Customers of the Ukiah plant will have their needs supplied by other Georgia-Pacific Resins plants. Production at Ukiah is expected to cease within 18-22 months, as soon as modifications at the other plants have been completed and customers have had an opportunity to test the quality and performance of the products from their alternative Georgia-Pacific Resins sources.

“In recent years, we have taken steps at several of our manufacturing facilities to provide additional production capacity, the opportunity to consolidate certain processes, reductions in production costs and overall improvements in competitiveness,” said Mario Concha,

Georgia-Pacific Corp. vice president, chemicals and resins. “Those improvements helped lead us to the decision to close the Ukiah plant.”

The Ukiah plant opened in 1975. It has produced resins used to make particleboard and hardboard, and other resins for the wood laminating industry, for insulation and glass windings on pipes and for paper saturation.
