Georgia-Pacific Resins Acquires Actrachem

ATLANTA, Georgia. September 21, 1999 -- Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc. (GPRI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Georgia-Pacific Corp., today announced the acquisition of the business and substantially all of the assets of Actrachem L.P., headquartered at Bedford Park, Ill. Actrachem is a manufacturer of specialty chemical additives for metalworking fluids, oil field chemicals, textile chemicals and other specialty markets.

Georgia-Pacific is a major producer of crude tall oil (CTO), which is recovered from wood fiber during the pulping stage of papermaking. GPRI utilizes an ample internal supply of CTO to manufacture an extensive line of tall oil fatty acids (TOFA), rosins, custom blends and TOFA derivatives. Georgia-Pacific Resins expanded its derivatives product line last year with the introduction of XTOLUBE polyol esters and XTAMIDE DEA-free amides as lubricity additives and corrosion inhibitors for metalworking fluids.

“Our business strategy is to develop value-added products from tall oil fatty acids that we produce,” said Mario Concha, president of GPRI. “The Actrachem acquisition provides us with technology and applications capabilities in several of our target markets for these products.”

Georgia-Pacific Resins is a market leader in chemical products for the building products and pulp and paper industries as well as other industrial manufacturing processes. Including the Actrachem plant, GPRI operates 20 chemical manufacturing facilities and a centralized research and development facility in the United States. In addition, GPRI is a partner in chemical manufacturing joint ventures in South Africa and South America, and is pursuing a strategy of expanding its product lines and international market coverage.

Georgia-Pacific, one of the world’s leading manufacturers and distributors of pulp, paper and building products and related chemicals, consists of two distinct operating groups -- the Georgia-Pacific Group (NYSE: GP) which includes the pulp, paper and building products business, and The Timber Company (NYSE: TGP) which manages 5.8 million acres of timberland in North America.
