ATLANTA, Georgia. July 16, 1998 -- Mario Concha has joined Georgia-Pacific Corp. as vice president - chemicals and resins, reporting to Lee M. Thomas, executive vice president - paper and chemicals. In this position, Concha is responsible for all of Georgia-Pacific’s chemical operations, which include Georgia-Pacific Resins Inc. (GPRI) and the company’s chemical businesses at Bellingham, Wash.
Concha was most recently president - international of GS Industries, a privately held producer of specialty steels, with annual revenues of $1 billion, headquartered at Charlotte, N.C. He has extensive experience in the chemical industry, both domestically and internationally, having worked with Union Carbide and Occidental Chemical.
“We are excited to bring in someone with Mario Concha’s unique abilities as we continue to pursue domestic and international opportunities in the chemical and resins businesses,” Thomas said.
Georgia-Pacific operates 20 chemical manufacturing operations and related research facilities in the United States. GPRI is a market leader in chemical products for the building products and pulp and paper industries as well as other industrial manufacturing processes.
Georgia-Pacific Resins, which in March purchased a 50 percent shareholder interest in a formaldehyde and adhesives manufacturing facility in South Africa, continues to explore and evaluate opportunities to further expand its markets and enhance its business relationships throughout the world.
Concha has been managing GS Industries’ international division, which includes an integrated steel mill in Peru, 10 other manufacturing operations in Canada, Latin America, Europe and the Far East, and various overseas business offices. He was associated with GS Industries and its predecessor, Armco Inc., since 1992.
He previously served as vice president - international with Occidental Chemical Corp. at Dallas; and held a series of executive positions in the United States and Europe with Union Carbide Corp. Concha is a graduate of Cornell University.
James R. Taylor, who served as vice president of Georgia-Pacific’s chemical division since 1986, will continue to report to Thomas assisting with the growth of the chemical business.

Taylor joined Georgia-Pacific in 1967 as manager of its Conway, N.C. chemical plant. Over his career, he held several positions including southeastern area manager, sales and marketing manager, and general manager for the division’s resin business. Prior to joining Georgia-Pacific, Taylor was employed by Borden Chemical.
