Georgia-Pacific Resins Refocuses Emphasis on its Pine Chemicals Business

ATLANTA, Georgia. May 05, 2000 -- Georgia-Pacific Resins, Inc. (GPRI), the chemical business of Georgia-Pacific Corp., today announced the creation of a pine chemicals group, formerly known as the pulp chemicals group.

“This new name better describes our business, which is adding value to chemicals derived from the pine tree,” said Charles W. Morris, general manager - specialty chemicals and resins. “It also reflects our commitment to extract the maximum value from Georgia-Pacific’s vast resource of renewable pine forests.”

The GPRI pine chemicals group offers a comprehensive line of tall oil products derived from crude tall oil, a co-product of the kraft pulping process. The products are used in a wide range of applications, including papermaking, metalworking fluids, coatings, inks, adhesives, rubber production and mining chemicals.

The markets served by the GPRI pine chemicals group include:
Tall Oil Fractionated Products – Georgia-Pacific’s tall oil fractionation unit is the most modern and technically advanced tall oil refinery in the United States. Crude tall oil is separated and purified into numerous grades of rosins and fatty acids. The product line includes XTOL® tall oil fatty acids and LYTOR® tall oil rosins, which are formulated to meet the most demanding requirements.

Metalworking and Lubricants – Georgia-Pacific’s Actrachem operations in Chicago, Ill., are located in the hub of the metalworking industry. Its diverse portfolio of products includes ACTRALUBE™and XTOLUBE® polyol esters, lubricity additives, emulsifiers, bases, sulfated fatty acids and oils, phosphate esters, ACTRACOR™ corrosion inhibitors, and alkanolamides for a variety of lubrication applications. By working closely with customers, the GPRI sales and technical staffs provide the industry with innovative products that meet constantly changing metalworking performance and environmental requirements.

Adhesives and Sealants – Georgia-Pacific manufactures an extensive line of rosin- based products serving the adhesives, sealants, pavement marking and other industries that utilize specialty rosin derivatives. Its NovaRes® product line is composed of a wide variety of tall oil rosin esters and modified esters that are used as tackifiers for adhesives. These rosin derivatives offer broad polymer compatibility, narrow molecular weight distribution, light color, oxidation resistance, and superior chemical adhesion properties.

Oil Field & Drilling – A combination of strengths gives Georgia-Pacific the ability to service the oil field industry. GPRI is a major producer of both tall oil- and lignin-based products. The lignosulfonate products manufactured in Bellingham, Wash., and Houston, Texas, are marketed worldwide. These lignin-based products, combined with proven emulsifier technology and fatty amide chemistry, a fully-equipped mud lab and an experienced technical staff, allow Georgia-Pacific to custom formulate products to satisfy many specific application needs.

Rubber Processing – As a leading supplier of tall oil products, Georgia-Pacific offers a broad line of rosins, modified rosins, soaps and disproportionated rosins for rubber manufacturing and processing. The company has developed high-efficiency emulsifier technology and can formulate products for specific process needs.

Georgia-Pacific also manufactures tall oil-based products that serve a wide variety of industries, including concrete, asphalt and paving, printing inks and processing, surfactants, coatings, mining, detergents and cleaners, textiles processing, investment casting and formulated products.
